FOSTER Home Application

FOSTER HOME PROVIDERS NEEDED

We are always in need of foster homes for our dogs.  The providers help prepare the dogs for their adoptive homes.  If you would like to be a foster home provider, please complete our application.  The link is above.  Our foster home providers are vital to the dogs' future.  You can be a part of making an amazing difference in these dogs' lives!  The experience will bring you a sense of accomplishment and fill your heart!

We put the dogs in need of a foster home on the temporary home facebook page.  From there, the providers have the opportunity to then post if they would like to provide a home for that particular dog.

The amount of time a dog spends in a foster home varies.  Some dogs get adopted very quickly.  If the dog has medical issues, it can be much longer.  The average time is about 6 weeks.  If the dog does not work out in your home, the dog can be returned to Second Chance at any time.

Foster home providers need to be able to transport the dog to veterinary appointments and adoption meetings as needed.  We encourage providers to participate in adoption meetings as the providers often know the dogs the best and can provide the most accurate information to the potential adopter.

Foster home providers can adopt the dog they are providing a foster home for.  They must complete the adoption application and be first in line to adopt.  If another person applies first, their application would be processed first.  We do ask that you do not apply to be a foster home provider when your only intention is to adopt.  If you wish to only adopt, please put an adoption application instead.

Feel free to text us at 641-297-2137 with any questions you might have.  We would be happy to discuss the program with you.

Thank you so much for considering to provide a foster home for a dog in need!

TEMP HOME TAILS

From Amber, one of our awesome temp homes:

"My husband and I have been fostering through Second Chance since October.  Bill and I have two rescue dogs of our own. I kept telling him I wanted another but we knew we couldn’t have three dogs in our home at this time so I read about fostering and convinced him to give it a try! Eight foster dogs later, we couldn't imagine our life without this amazing opportunity.  We have had young pups and we have brought in five and six year old dogs.  Small, medium, large. Some dogs were barely in our home a week while one very special girl stayed with us for almost 7 months.  Fostering is so very bittersweet but we wouldn’t change that for anything.  We bring in these dogs that need some time before going to their forever home.  We feed them, bathe them, sometime potty train and teach them how to walk on a leash.  But most of all-we love them. We show them compassion, when some have never experienced it.  We get them ready to be loved by their forever home and we get ourselves ready to say goodbye.  We are always overjoyed when they get adopted, that is the goal.  But it is also hard for us to see them go each and every time.  When this happens we just have to remember what the bigger picture is and why we do what we do.  All of us as fosters are making a huge change to these dogs’ lives but the dogs are making such an impact on ours as well. "

From Jessica, a terrific temp home who became a hospice home:

A little over a year ago, I started looking at adoptable dogs... a lot. I was Facebook following pretty much every possible rescue within a 50 mile radius of where I lived. I even applied to adopt one particular dog but I wasn't first in line. (It wasn't meant to be) One day, I saw an adorable little Maltese on the SCDR Facebook page and I loved him immediately. He was 10 years old, his tongue hung out - I thought he was the most adorable dog ever. But I didn't apply for him. I had been struggling a lot with whether or not we (my husband and I) should take on the extra expense. It was then that I saw a post on Facebook from SCDR that they needed Temporary Home providers. I was so excited - I knew this was the answer. I applied to be a Temporary Home - was approved and so the journey begins.

Our first Foster was Mollie - an adorable tiny Maltese puppy that we only had a for a week. We knew she'd go fast.  :)  When we took Mollie to the rescue for her adoption appointment, we planned on picking up another dog to take home with us.  Because I needed a hypo allergenic dog - they gave me 2 options.  One option was Frazier and in my mind, he was the ONLY option. He looked at me with that stupid little tongue hanging out and I couldn't believe I was getting the opportunity to take this adorable old dog home with me. The same one that I had seen about 3 weeks before on Facebook.  We kind of figured that we would have Frazier for awhile because we didn't think that older dogs were adopted as quickly. But we were okay with that. During our first 2 weeks together I had already fallen in love with him but I cried. I cried because Frazier had never been potty trained in his entire 10 years of life and he lifted his leg on everything. But because I'm stubborn and couldn't break my commitment to this dog - I started looking for things that would save my sanity.  The Temporary Home coordinator at the rescue suggested a belly band.  I scoured Amazon and decided on washable, reusable diapers instead. They saved my life. I could cook dinner and not have to watch him. And as time went on - he learned and we don't have to wear diapers at home anymore.

About a month into having Frazier, he started coughing a lot. I recorded one of his coughing fits for the vet and took him in for a visit. Unfortunately, Frazier was diagnosed with a collapsing trachea and his x-rays were not good. Frazier went from being a Temp Home dog to a Hospice dog.  He was used to us - we had already accomplished so much. So when SCDR asked me if I would be able to provide him a hospice home until he passed - the answer was yes, without hesitation.

And so began our journey of spoiling him rotten and giving him everything he never had before. Frazier gets tired on walks so we take the doggy stroller with us and after a few blocks, he strolls.  :)  He barks at you when you eat cheeseburgers and pizza because we've clearly given him too many bites of hamburger and pizza crust.  He loves other dogs so we've taken him to 3 dog parties. He even won a costume contest.  My niece states that he is her best friend and my 3 year old dog, Oden, seems to feel the same way. We celebrated his 11th Birthday, last February, with doggie pupcakes.
Frazier has filled our hearts more than we knew was possible. We now give him a pill every night to control his coughing and he's doing well. We have no idea how long he'll be with us but I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that this little dog was meant for our family.  I cannot thank SCDR enough for rescuing him and giving me the opportunity to give him a life.  We love our Frazier!
